Myanmar (Burma): Things to See and Do in Yangon (Tourist Attractions)

Despite what most people assume, Yangon is actually the former capital of Burma (the current capital is Naypyidaw). Formerly known as Rangoon, it is on of the fastest growing cities in the world and a great place to visit. The city has an amazing mix of colonial architecture and modern reshaped architecture. Yangon is vibrant again and is ready to be explored!

Here are a few things to see and do in Yangon.

Shwedagon Pagoda:

Shwedagon is known as the Great Dagon Pagoda. It is the first place you should visit in Yangon. If you do not visit this site, you might just regret it. The over 2,600 year old Pagoda has an endless amount of glistening golden Buddhas adorning the temple. The Stupa is 325 feet, and the lights are forever changing. At night you can see the colors transform from gold to orange and amber hues. It is a photographic opportunity.

Bogyoke Market:

Yangon is known for their outdoor markets and street foods. At Bogyoke Market, you can sample Myanmar cuisine as well as buy spices, herbs, papaya, watermelon and green leaf vegetables. You can also get homemade custom fabrics that can only be found in Yangon.

Karaweik Palace:

Karaweik Palace is your place for great cuisine and entertainment. You can float on the Kandawayi (Royal) Lake at Karaweik Palace. It is in the centre of Yangon. Karaweik Palace offers a modern blend of Mayanmar and Chinese cuisine at their international buffet. With dinner comes a cultural show that includes dancers and orchestra.

Kandawgyi Park:

With 110 acres of gardens and 150 water acres, the picturesque Kandawgyi Park is your recreational hub. The park has an orchid garden, a children’s playground and picnic area. There is also a mini zoo that has ostriches and a walkway around the lake. Take a nightly stroll to relax. Peak vacation times can be hectic, but you still should be able to find a quiet place under the large shady trees to meditate amongst the beautiful flowers.

Kyaikto (Golden Rock):

The landmark is a beautiful, but it is outside of Yangon. If you are a backpacker, you will love the journey to see the miracle Golden Rock. When will you ever see a rock floating in mid air again?

If you are looking for a great place that is full of culture and modern amenities, Yangon is a great place to visit.
