Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and is the country’s second largest city. It’s also has great weather for tourism. The city’s location is on the Red River giving it a cooler climate than other cities in the southern region. There are many things to do while you’re visiting Hanoi. It is a walkable city that’s great for backpacking and foot travel with all the main sites practically within walking distance. Here are a few recommendations on a few sites around the city.
Hoan Kiem Lake:
Also known as The Lake of The Restored Sword, is a lake in the historical center of Hanoi. The lake is one of the major scenic spots in the city and serves as a focal point for its public life.
The Water Puppet Theater:
Water puppetry is an age-old tradition in Vietnam, dating back nearly 1000 years. The show is about an hour-long and takes place every evening not far from the lake.
Temple Of Literature:
The Temple of Literature, built-in 1070 is Vietnam’s oldest temple to education and the site of the oldest university. There are five different court yards with beautiful gardens that are tranquil and make for a great place to relax. Historically, it is considered to be one of the country’s finest sites and tourist attractions.
Old Quarter:
The Old Quarter area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. There is lovely French architecture and many different walking tours to choose from. There is plenty of local cuisine, specialties as well as several clubs and bars.
Hoa Prison:
The Hoa Lo Prison, also known to American prisoners of war as the “Hanoi Hiltonâ€. It was a prison used by the French colonists in Vietnam for political prisoners and later by North Vietnam for prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. Senator John McCain was a prisoner here for over 5 years during the war.
